If you plan on investing on the stock market or the type of investing plan you have involves buying and selling stocks, you need a stock broker. Brokers handle the buying and selling of stocks on the stock market and works under a brokerage company. The need for a broker if you plan to buy and sell stocks on the stock exchange is a must.
In order for stockbrokers to have a license, they need to pass two different and difficult tests. Most brokers have a bachelors degree or masters degree and most have a background in business or finance. There is a difference between a stock broker and a stock market analyst. Stock market analysts analyses the stock exchange and predicts how a certain stock will perform. A stock broker buys or sells stocks as per the investors instruction.
Stockbrokers have commissions per sale in most cases and that’s how they earn. A percentage is earned every time you tell your stockbroker to buy or sell stocks. Some brokers charge on a flat rate per transaction for the fee.
You must also decide whether you want a discount broker or a full service broker. Discount brokers just buy and sell stocks and do what you tell them to do. Full service brokers can provide investment advice and may offer more investment types. They are also usually paid in commissions.
If you are just starting out, you may want to go with the services of a full service broker to help and advice you in making good investment decisions. They can give you what you need the most as you are just starting in the stock market. On the other hand, you may just need a discount broker to make trades for you if you already have enough experience and skill investing on the stock market.

What’s the best website to use for buying and selling stocks?
I want to know what the BEST and CHEAPEST websites are for buying and selling stocks. ShareBuilder.com advertises $4 trades but it seems that they are trying to charge me $15.95 a trade using their Basic Account.
IB (Interactive Brokers) does charge $.005 (half a penny) per share. MB Trading charges $.01 per share (minimum $1.00 per trade). I use MB Trading, and have had no problems for years.
Advantages: much cheaper, faster, better execution prices
Disadvantages: must install proprietary software (can’t use browser), no fancy website with lots of useless tools and research
You can guess where my bias lies. Sharebuilder only executes orders once a week, which is murder when you consider many stocks can move 5-10% in a week. The positive is that it enforces long-term discipline for buy-and-hold investors.

When you buy a stock… you can sell it for what it’s worth at any time. Hopefully it will go up. They don’t do that when I buy them… LOL. Holding a stock and hoping for a gain is called “going long”.
You can sell a stock short (“short” a stock) and make money if the stock decreases in value. How it works is you sell a stock borrowed from your broker. If the stock goes down, you “buy to cover” at a lower price and make a profit. If the stock goes up you owe money… You can buy to cover at any time and cut your losses if you don’t think the price will come back down.
